In Antwerp, Rubens received a Renaissance humanist education, studying Latin and classical literature. By fourteen he began his artistic apprenticeship with Tobias Verhaeght.
Subsequently, he studied under two of the city's leading painters of the time, the late Mannerist artists Adam van Noort and Otto van Veen.
Rubens completed his education in , at which time he entered the Guild of St. Luke as an independent master. In Rubens travelled to Italy.
The colouring and compositions of Veronese and Tintoretto had an immediate effect on Rubens's painting, and his later, mature style was profoundly influenced by Titian.
There, he studied classical Greek and Roman art and copied works of the Italian masters. Paul's Church in Antwerp. This journey marked the first of many during his career that combined art and diplomacy.
He returned to Italy in , where he remained for the next four years, first in Mantua and then in Genoa and Rome.
He also began a book illustrating the palaces in the city, which was published in as Palazzi di Genova. From to , he was mostly in Rome.
During this period Rubens received, with the assistance of Cardinal Jacopo Serra the brother of Maria Pallavicini , his most important commission to date for the High Altar of the city's most fashionable new church, Santa Maria in Vallicella also known as the Chiesa Nuova.
The subject was to be St. Gregory the Great and important local saints adoring an icon of the Virgin and Child. Rubens's experiences in Italy continued to influence his work.
He continued to write many of his letters and correspondences in Italian, signed his name as "Pietro Paolo Rubens", and spoke longingly of returning to the peninsula—a hope that never materialized.
Upon hearing of his mother's illness in , Rubens planned his departure from Italy for Antwerp. However, she died before he arrived home.
His return coincided with a period of renewed prosperity in the city with the signing of the Treaty of Antwerp in April , which initiated the Twelve Years' Truce.
He received special permission to base his studio in Antwerp instead of at their court in Brussels , and to also work for other clients.
He remained close to the Archduchess Isabella until her death in , and was called upon not only as a painter but also as an ambassador and diplomat.
Rubens further cemented his ties to the city when, on 3 October , he married Isabella Brant , the daughter of a leading Antwerp citizen and humanist, Jan Brant.
In Rubens moved into a new house and studio that he designed. Now the Rubenshuis Museum, the Italian-influenced villa in the centre of Antwerp accommodated his workshop, where he and his apprentices made most of the paintings, and his personal art collection and library, both among the most extensive in Antwerp.
During this time he built up a studio with numerous students and assistants. His most famous pupil was the young Anthony van Dyck , who soon became the leading Flemish portraitist and collaborated frequently with Rubens.
He also often collaborated with the many specialists active in the city, including the animal painter Frans Snyders , who contributed the eagle to Prometheus Bound c.
The "High House" was built next to the village church. Altarpieces such as The Raising of the Cross and The Descent from the Cross — for the Cathedral of Our Lady were particularly important in establishing Rubens as Flanders' leading painter shortly after his return.
The Raising of the Cross , for example, demonstrates the artist's synthesis of Tintoretto's Crucifixion for the Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Venice, Michelangelo 's dynamic figures, and Rubens's own personal style.
This painting has been held as a prime example of Baroque religious art. Rubens used the production of prints and book title-pages, especially for his friend Balthasar Moretus , the owner of the large Plantin-Moretus publishing house , to extend his fame throughout Europe during this part of his career.
In , Rubens embarked upon a printmaking enterprise by soliciting an unusual triple privilege an early form of copyright to protect his designs in France, the Southern Netherlands, and United Provinces.
Rubens also designed the last significant woodcuts before the 19th-century revival in the technique. The Marie de' Medici cycle now in the Louvre was installed in , and although he began work on the second series it was never completed.
After the end of the Twelve Years' Truce in , the Spanish Habsburg rulers entrusted Rubens with a number of diplomatic missions.
He relied on his friendship with Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc to get information on political developments in France. He also made several trips to the northern Netherlands as both an artist and a diplomat.
At the courts he sometimes encountered the attitude that courtiers should not use their hands in any art or trade, but he was also received as a gentleman by many.
Philip IV confirmed Rubens's status as a knight a few months later. Rubens was in Madrid for eight months in — He also began a renewed study of Titian's paintings, copying numerous works including the Madrid Fall of Man — His stay in Antwerp was brief, and he soon travelled on to London where he remained until April While Rubens's international reputation with collectors and nobility abroad continued to grow during this decade, he and his workshop also continued to paint monumental paintings for local patrons in Antwerp.
Rubens's last decade was spent in and around Antwerp. Major works for foreign patrons still occupied him, such as the ceiling paintings for the Banqueting House at Inigo Jones 's Palace of Whitehall , but he also explored more personal artistic directions.
In the latter painting, which was made for the Spanish court, the artist's young wife was recognized by viewers in the figure of Venus.
In , Rubens bought an estate outside Antwerp, the Steen , where he spent much of his time. He also drew upon the Netherlandish traditions of Pieter Bruegel the Elder for inspiration in later works like Flemish Kermis c.
Rubens died from heart failure, a result of his chronic gout , on 30 May He was interred in the Saint James' Church in Antwerp.
A burial chapel for the artist and his family was built in the church. Construction on the chapel started n and was completed in when Cornelis van Mildert the son of Rubens' friend, the scupltor Johannes van Mildert delivered the altarstone.
The chapel is a marble altar portico with two columns framing the altarpiece of the Virgin and child with saints painted by Rubens himself.
The painting expresses the basis tenets of the Counter Reformation through the figures of the Virgin and saints.
In the upper niche of the retable is a marble statue depicting the Virgin as the Mater Dolorosa whose heart is pierced by a sword, which was likely sculpted by Lucas Faydherbe , a pupil of Rubens.
The remains of Rubens' second wife Helena Fourment and two of her children one of which fathered by Rubens were later also laid to rest in the chapel.
Over the coming centuries about 80 descendants from the Rubens family were interred in the chapel. At the request of canon van Parijs, Rubens' epitaph, which had been written in Latin by his friend Gaspar Gevartius was chiselled on the chapel floor.
In the good tradition of the Renaissance, Rubens is compared in the epitaph to Apelles, the most famous painter of Greek Antiquity.
Many of his descendants married into important noble families of Antwerp. His nudes of various biblical and mythological women are especially well-known.
Painted in the Baroque tradition of depicting women as soft-bodied, passive, and highly sexualized beings, his nudes emphasize the concepts of fertility, desire, physical beauty, temptation, and virtue.
Skillfully rendered, these paintings of nude women are thought by feminists to have been created to sexually appeal to his largely male audience of patrons.
His large-scale cycle representing Marie de Medicis focuses on several classic female archetypes like the virgin, consort, wife, widow, and diplomatic regent.
Rubens's depiction of males is equally stylized, replete with meaning, and quite the opposite of his female subjects.
His male nudes represent highly athletic and large mythical or biblical men. Unlike his female nudes, most of his male nudes are depicted partially nude, with sashes, armour, or shadows shielding them from being completely unclothed.
These men are twisting, reaching, bending, and grasping: all of which portrays his male subjects engaged in a great deal of physical, sometimes aggressive, action.
The concepts Rubens artistically represents illustrate the male as powerful, capable, forceful and compelling. The allegorical and symbolic subjects he painted reference the classic masculine tropes of athleticism, high achievement, valour in war, and civil authority.
Rubens was a great admirer of Leonardo da Vinci's work. Using an engraving done 50 years after Leonardo started his project on the Battle of Anghiari, Rubens did a masterly drawing of the Battle which is now in the Louvre in Paris.
Paintings from Rubens's workshop can be divided into three categories: those he painted by himself, those he painted in part mainly hands and faces , and copies supervised from his drawings or oil sketches.
He had, as was usual at the time, a large workshop with many apprentices and students. It has not always been possible to identify who were Rubens' pupils and assistants since as a court painter Rubens was not required to register his pupils with the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke.
About 20 pupils or assistants of Rubens have been identified, with various levels of evidence to include them as such.
It is also not clear from surviving records whether a particular person was a pupil or assistant in Rubens' workshop or was an artist who was an independent master collaborating on specific works with Rubens.
The unknowm Jacob Moerman was registerd as his pupil while Willem Panneels and Justus van Egmont were registered in the Guild's records as Rubens' assistants.
He also often sub-contracted elements such as animals, landscapes or still-lifes in large compositions to specialists such as animal painters Frans Snyders and Paul de Vos , or other artists such as Jacob Jordaens.
One of his most frequent collaborators was Jan Brueghel the Younger. In July , Reubens was arrested in Sarasota, Florida , for masturbating during a film at an adult movie theater.
This sweep also resulted in three other arrests. When detectives examined his driver's license, Reubens told them, "I'm Pee-wee Herman", and offered to do a children's benefit for the sheriff's office, "to take care of this".
His second arrest was in when Reubens was placed on two years' probation for possession of marijuana, although adjudication was withheld.
The arrest was widely covered, and Reubens and his character both became the subject of ridicule. Disney-MGM Studios suspended a video that showed Pee-wee explaining how voice-over tracks were made from its studio tour.
Toys "R" Us removed Pee-wee toys from its stores. However, the popularity of the show had put it into syndication, which CBS revoked on July 29, On November 7, , Reubens pleaded no contest.
The plea kept the charge off Reubens' record and obligated him to spend 75 hours performing community service, where he made two anti-drug public service announcements that were self-produced and financed.
Both PSAs were praised for showing the dangers of drugs in a manner kids could understand. Reubens, who for years would not give interviews or appear on talk shows, did make a subsequent public appearance as Pee-wee at the MTV Video Music Awards on September 5, where he asked the audience, "Heard any good jokes lately?
During the s, Reubens kept a low profile, dedicating himself to writing and collecting a variety of things, "everything from fake food, to lamps", although he did do some dubbing and took small parts in films such as 's Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Tim Burton 's Batman Returns Reubens portrayed the Penguin 's father and 's Matilda and Dunston Checks In.
In , he voiced for a character in another one of Burton's productions, The Nightmare Before Christmas. Reubens dated actress Debi Mazar in after he started attending film premieres with her.
The role earned him positive reviews and his first and only non-Pee-wee Emmy nomination, for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series.
He appeared six times on the show between and The project got stuck in development hell , and was later dropped when Reubens' ideas grew too elaborate and expensive, although Philip Rosenthal blamed NBC's negative response on Reubens being on a "blacklist".
By , Reubens had given several interviews as himself and made public appearances while promoting the movie Mystery Men , the first being on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in In , Reubens had his first extended television role since Playhouse , as the host of the short-lived ABC game show You Don't Know Jack , based on the game of the same name.
It was cancelled after six episodes due to low ratings. His performance was praised and he began receiving scripts for potential movie projects.
In November , while filming David LaChapelle 's video for Elton John 's " This Train Don't Stop There Anymore ", Reubens learned that police were at his home with a search warrant , acting on a tip from a witness in the pornography case against actor Jeffrey Jones , finding among over 70, items of kitsch memorabilia, two grainy videotapes and dozens of photographs that the city attorney 's office characterized as a collection of child pornography.
Paul Reubens on the charges. In March , child pornography charges were dropped in exchange for Reubens' guilty plea to a lesser charge.
For the next three years, he was required to register his address with the sheriff's office and he could not be in the company of minors without the permission of a parent or legal guardian.
He spent the next two years in Florida caring for his terminally ill father, who died in February of cancer.
Reubens has made cameos and guest appearances in numerous projects. He played Rick of the citizen's patrol on the popular Comedy Central series Reno !
The video has the band engaging in a comical soapbox car race, with Reubens playing the bad guy who sabotages the race.
This time he was recommended for the role by Dirt star and close friend Courteney Cox. Cox's husband, David Arquette , would then cast Reubens for his directorial debut, the film The Tripper.
In January , Reubens hinted that negotiations were under way for his stage show to come back, and in August the return of The Pee-wee Herman Show was announced.
But after appearing for the first time since as Pee-wee at Spike TV 's Guys' Choice Awards, Reubens had remained optimistic and had jokingly said he's no longer nervous about being young Pee-wee again thanks to digital retouching.
The show was originally scheduled to begin November 8 and continue until the 29th at the Music Box Theater in Hollywood.
A Twitter account, a Facebook account and a new website were made for Pee-wee after the show changed venues. On January 15, , Reubens appeared on Saturday Night Live as Pee-Wee in an extended and well received segment depicting Andy Samberg and Pee-wee getting drunk, taking a ride on a mechanical bull, doing the tequila dance and ambushing Anderson Cooper in an alley way with a chair.
From to Reubens contributed his voice talents to the animated series Tron: Uprising as Pavel.
Ever since Reubens started giving interviews again after his arrest, he has talked about the two scripts he has written for future Pee-wee Herman films.
Reubens once called his first script The Pee-wee Herman Story , describing it as a black comedy. He has also referred to the script as "dark Pee-wee" or "adult Pee-wee", with the plot involving Pee-wee becoming famous as a singer after making a hit single and moving to Hollywood , where "he does everything wrong and becomes a big jerk".
The second film, a family-friendly adventure, is called Pee-wee's Playhouse: The Movie by Reubens, and follows Pee-wee and his Playhouse friends on a road-trip adventure, meaning that they would leave the house for the first time and go out into "Puppetland".
All of the original characters of the show, live-action and puppets are included in Reubens' script.
The story happens in a fantasy land that would be reminiscent of H. Pufnstuf and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
Although he hasn't revealed much about the scripts, he has said that one of the two films opens in prison. Reubens approached Pee-wee's Big Adventure director Tim Burton with one of the scripts and talked to Johnny Depp about the possibility of having him portray Pee-wee, but Burton was too busy, and Depp said he would have to think about it.
In January , Reubens reprised his role as Pee-wee and reused the set of Pee-wee's Playhouse albeit slightly modified for a short sketch on Funny or Die.
In the sketch, Pee-wee comes home and shows off a brand-new iPad given to him by Steve Jobs. This leads to a long argument between him and his puppet friends, who point out all of the iPad's disadvantages — even Conky himself points out its flaws by stating that "it looks like a giant iPhone ".
In the end, Pee-wee uses the iPad as a serving tray to hold glasses of milk and lemonade during a party being held at the Playhouse hours later.
The film released on March 18, on Netflix to positive reception. Reubens previously portrayed the character in the original Star Tours attraction in , and Star Wars Rebels in From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
